Saraji/ Australia

The Saraji coal mine is located in the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, Australia. It is estimated that the mine has coal resources of 502 million tons, of which 442 million tons have been proved and 60 million tons inferred (June 2019). The open-pit mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and has been in production since 1974. The Saraji mine produced 10.1 million tonnes in 2018 and 9.7 million tonnes in 2019.

Goonyella Riverside/ Australia

The Goonyella Riverside coal Mine is located in the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, Australia. It is estimated that the mine has coal resources of 549 million tons, of which 530 million tons have been proved and 19 million tons inferred (June 2019). The open-pit mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). The Goonyella mine began production in 1971 and was merged with the neighbouring Riverside mine in 1989. Goonyella Riverside produced 15.8 million tonnes in 2018 and 17.1 million tonnes in 2019. The BMA implemented automated transport for Goonyella Riverside in 2019.

Mt Arthur/ Australia

The Mt Arthur coal mine is located in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, Australia. It is estimated that the mine has coal resources of 591 million tons, of which 292 million tons have been proved and 299 million tons inferred (June 2019). The mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton and consists primarily of two open-pit mines, the Northern and Southern open-pit mines. Mt Arthur has mined more than 20 coal seams. Mining operations began in 1968 and produce more than 18 million tons a year. The mine has an estimated reserve life of 35 years.

Peak Downs/ Australia

The Peak Downs coal mine is located in the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, Australia. It is estimated that the mine has coal resources of 718 million tons (June 2019). Peak Downs is owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). The mine is an open-pit mine that began production in 1972 and produced more than 11.8 million tons in 2019. Coal from the mine is shipped by rail to the Cape Coal Terminal near Mackay.

Black Thunder/the United States

The Black Thunder Mine is a 35,700-acre strip coal mine located in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. The mine is owned and operated by Arch Coal. It is estimated that the mine has coal resources of 816.5 million tons (December 2018). The open-pit mining complex comprises seven mining areas and three loading facilities. Production was 71.1 million tons in 2018 and 70.5 million tons in 2017. The raw coal produced is transported directly on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroad.

Moatize/ Mozambique

The Moatize mine is located in Mozambique’s Tete province. The mine has an estimated coal resource of 985.7 million tonnes (As of December 2018) Moatize is operated by Brazilian mining company Vale, which holds an 80.75% interest in the mine. Mitsui (14.25%) and Mozambican Mining (5%) hold the remaining interest. Moatize is Vale’s first greenfield project in Africa. The concession to build and operate the mine was awarded in 2006. The open-pit mine began operations in August 2011 and has an annual output of 11.5 million tons.

Raspadskaya/Russia

Raspadskaya, located in the Kemerovo region of the Russian Federation, is Russia’s largest coal mine. It is estimated that the mine has coal resources of 1.34 billion tons (December 2018). Raspadskaya Coal Mine consists of two underground mines, Raspadskaya and MuK-96, and an open pit mine called Razrez Raspadsky. The mine is owned and operated by Raspadskaya Coal Company. Mining of Raspadskaya began in the late 1970s. Total production was 12.7 million tons in 2018 and 11.4 million tons in 2017.

Heidaigou/China

Heidaigou Coal Mine is an open-pit mine located in the middle of the Zhungeer coalfield in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The mine is estimated to hold 1.5 billion tons of coal resources. The mining area is located 150 kilometers southwest of Ordos City, with a planned mining area of 42.36 square kilometers. Shenhua Group owns and operates the mine. Heidaigou has been producing low sulfur and low phosphorus coal since 1999. The mine has an annual output of 29m tonnes and peaked at more than 31m tonnes.

The Haerwusu coal mine is located in the central part of the Zhungeer coalfield in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Haerwusu Coal Mine is the key construction of the super large coal mine during the “11th Five-Year Plan” in China, with a preliminary design capacity of 20 million tons/year. After capacity expansion and transformation, the current production capacity has reached 35 million tons/year. The mining area is about 61.43 square kilometers, with proven coal resource reserves of 1.7 billion tons (2020), owned and operated by Shenhua Group.

The largest coal mine in the world is the North Antelope Rochelle mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. The mine is estimated to contain more than 1.7 billion tons of coal resources (December 2018). Owned and operated by Peabody Energy, it is an open-pit mine consisting of three mining pits. The North Antelope Rochelle mine produced 98.4 million tons in 2018 and 101.5 million tons in 2017. The mine is considered the cleanest coal in the United States.
